On Wednesday 14th July 2003, Steve represented his regiment; the Household Cavalry, in a London district Army athletics meeting at Battersea track in London.
This was the first and only time Steve had ran a 1-mile race on the track as opposed to the more modern 1500m race. It was a muggy afternoon and Steve used the 2-mile route from his Army marrital quarter in Knightsbridge Barracks as a warm up.
Steve led the race from start to finish and crossed the line in a time of 3:59:24 joining another exclusive club of athletes to dip under the 4-minute barrier for the mile.
The AAA's (as they were called at the time), refused to aknowledge Steve's time as an official time because the time keepers had not attended an approved AAA's timing course, nor was the meeting sanctioned by the AAA's. Not that that really matters......
